A spring drought grips the woodlands of Mt. Shaw, and survival is suddenly uncertain. When the vernal pools dry up and water becomes scarce, the woodland animals of Woodlands, New Hampshire must work together like never before. Guided by the wise elder Rain-Bow, the Woodland Home Range Council sends Riley a brave and intelligent eastern chipmunk known for his remarkable communication skills on a dangerous journey to the Riparian Forest in search of help.

Joined by Digger, an expert excavator with a big heart, Riley encounters a colony of hardworking beavers led by Alder the Elder. As drought conditions worsen, old fears, difficult negotiations, and the challenge of survival test the courage and teamwork of every creature in the forest.
